Early 17th century craftsmen drew inspiration from imported Chinese decorative forms found on cabinets, porcelain, and embroideries. Our Montespan Settee is so named for Louis XIV's mistress, Athenais de Montespan, who had the first Chinoiserie-influenced interior in the Trianon de Porcelaine designed by Louis Le Vau at Versailles. This Chinoiserie-style settee is handcrafted of solid poplar and finished in rich red Chinese lacquer. The slatted seat, resting on square legs, has x-formed sides, while the back is composed of 5 circles and 4 solid rounds. The top rail centrally curves up to also form an x. A charming addition to a covered veranda, conservatory or entrance hall.
66" long x 20" deep x 35" high
