Our Directoire-style chest exemplifies the delicate, light feel of late 18th century hand-decorated furniture. Topping the two-drawer piece is a faux marble painted, fitted solid wood top in shades of green and cream; it beautifully coordinates with our chest's golden honeyed finish. Gilded, raised gesso figures in a sparse landscape decorate the drawer fronts; in the distance, pagodas and other lands are set against a soft cream background. Two handles adorned with a gilt bronze escutcheon and a matching tassel center each drawer. The shaped apron has an inset plaque of black with gold figures, drawing the eye downward. Carved rectangles separate the chest's hand-fluted pilasters from the squared, tapered legs, terminating in a spade foot.
