The Royal Coat of Arms of Scotland is flanked by two unicorns and topped by the helm and crest, including the Honours of Scotland. Atop, a simple "In De-Fence" (sic) refers to the royal Scottish motto. This illustration is taken from a 1654 book plate for the "New Atlas of the Kingdoms of Scotland and Ireland." The extraordinary colors, substantial scale, and historic subject matter make for an impressive piece of heraldic art. Printed on archival paper, this reproduction book plate floats above a taupe colored backing surrounded by a hand-rubbed black frame with maroon undertones and a golden interior edge.
